Dental Sealants

Dr. Kenneth Yost may recommend a dental sealant to protect your teeth and smile, especially if you have an increased risk for tooth decay. They can be placed in just a few minutes and last for several years to provide long-term protection for your teeth and smile.

Sealants are made from a clear or tooth-colored resin material and painted onto the chewing surface of the teeth. Once placed on the teeth, the sealant forms a smooth, protective coating that works to block out decay-causing agents such as bacteria and food debris. This smooth coating also covers the natural pits and grooves of the tooth surface to make it easier to keep your teeth clean with normal brushing and flossing.

Sealants are typically applied to the permanent molars as soon as they come in (between the ages of 6 and 12 years). Adults with teeth prone to decay or teeth that have not been previously restored may also receive dental sealants.
